The vast majority of hi fi speakers available today are made for powerful transistor amplifiers, which are often very power hungry and can be a difficult load to drive for valve amplifiers. This is especially true of smaller stand mount and bookshelf speakers where huge amounts of midrange and treble are “dumped” in order to increase the relative bass output.

For example many loudspeaker designs use a four ohm bass unit, working on the premise that the amplifier power will double going from eight to four ohms. This of course does not happen with valve amplifiers; therefore the sound balance will be wrong.

A well designed efficient loudspeaker with a more constant impedance will give vastly improved performance in terms of volume level, solid bass and may even improve the life of your output valves as you will not be pushing them so hard.

It has been our goal for a long time to make a high quality loudspeaker designed with valve amplifiers. The success of our larger £999.95 MFV 3 speaker, has shown us that there is a demand for smaller speakers, where for some reason larger cabinets cannot be accommodated. So again we have used our experience to design and manufacture three smaller speaker systems for £599, £349, and £249.

Apart from the philosophy behind Icon speakers, all three systems are hand made to a very high standard using custom made units. Surprisingly each speaker unit is also hand made in limited quantities and our speaker expert not only makes use of CAD at the design stage, but afterwards uses his ears to match the units themselves in pairs. Each cabinet uses audio grade long grain MDF which is lined once with resonance absorbing bitumen, and again with sculpted acoustic foam.

The MFV2 is the larger of the trio. Designed for medium to large amplifiers of 30 to 100 Watts (depending upon room size and required sound level), it is capable of filling a large room with stunningly transparent music without being fatiguing.

The MFV6 is almost identical but having small dimensions is used to best advantage in a smaller room.

The MFV5 is very special. Again designed for smaller rooms it is able to get the best out of low powered and SE valve amplifiers. It uses a 4.5” full range driver with no crossover. It is extremely efficient, allowing 100% of the power of your amplifier to be transferred to the drive unit.
